Monthly Recap: SF: Tomales Bay Oyster Company

Updated: Jan 31

One of my favorite day trips in the Bay Area is easily Tomales Bay Oyster Company for good eats and fun in the sun. Join us as we recap the highlights of the month and celebrate the unique flavors that make Tomales Bay a true seafood haven.

Tomales Bay Oyster

Tomales Bay Oyster Company offers a delightful experience for the general public, providing access to their farm-fresh oysters, mussels, and clams for on-site consumption at their picnic grounds. Thanks to the consistently favorable weather in the Bay Area, these oysters maintain their exceptional quality throughout the year, eliminating the concept of a specific "oyster season" – a year-round treat!

Equipped with individual BBQ grills, shell disposal buckets, and designated trash cans, each picnic table invites you to bring your picnic/BBQ essentials. The concept is simple: you bring what you need, and they supply the premium shellfish for you to shuck. For more details on this unique experience, explore their website for additional information. Enjoy the convenience and freshness of Tomales Bay Oyster Company's offerings anytime you desire!

You can learn a little bit more about the specifics on their website.

The best oyster experience I've had in years. Thank you! – Michael Forkas

How to Shuck an Oyster

For those of you who have never shucked an oyster, I have the pleasure of sharing with you secrets from my good friend, the Shuck Master. She’s really an amazing shucker – Shuck Master demonstrates perfect shucking technique:

How to Shuck an Oyster

1) Drive your knife into the pointiest part of the oyster, parallel to the crack of the oyster, .

2) This will give you some wiggle room to dig inside the oyster.

3) Once you establish a crack, begin running your knife along the crack.

4) Run your knife halfway through the oyster.

5) Once you’re halfway through, begin rotating your knife so that it widens the opening.

6) The oyster should be pretty open by now, just do the rest of the work by pulling the shells apart, and voila!

I absolutely adore savoring these little oysters! We've tried the medium-sized ones before, but they were a bit too gooey for my liking. Pro tip: don't forget to bring along some lemon wedges, Tabasco, and whip up a quick Shallot Vinegar to elevate your oyster experience. Making the Shallot Vinegar is a breeze – just chop up some shallots, toss them into a jar, pour in some red wine vinegar, add a pinch of salt & pepper, and maybe a tiny teaspoon of sugar if you're feeling fancy.

During my first visit to Tomales Bay, I couldn't help but notice other savvy folks grilling up clams with pots on their grills. Turns out, Tomales Bay Oyster Company also offers fresh clams and mussels! Since then, I've been fixated on the idea that the next time I return, I'm bringing my own pot filled with butter, wine, shallots, and parsley to create a pot of pure deliciousness for my clams. Can't wait for that next culinary adventure! 🍋🌶️🍷 #OysterLove #ClamCookingFun

Tomales Bay's Oyster farms have once again taken center stage in our monthly recap. The combination of pristine waters, dedicated farmers, and culinary mastery make this coastal gem a must-visit for anyone with a love for seafood. As we savor the memories of the past month, we eagerly await the next chapter in Tamalas Bay's Oyster saga. Until then, may your plates be full and your taste buds delighted! 🌊🦐 #TamalasBayOysters #SeafoodAdventure #MonthlyRecap
